WHO IS WHO OF THE PROMINENT PERSONALITIES IN THE COORG STATE

Cheppudira M Poonacha, a member of Indian National Congress, was the Chief Minister of the Coorg State from 1952 to 1956.

Born at Athur Village near Gonikoppal in 1910, he studied at Gonikoppal, Virajpet, Mercara and St. Aloysius College, Mangalore. He quit his studies to join the Freedom Movement.

Poonacha was imprisoned during the Salt Satyagraha in 1931, followed by another four-month imprisonment in 1940, and for the third time during the ‘Quit India’ Movement in 1942.

He worked as a Sub-Editor in the Kodagu weekly which was in the forefront during the Freedom Movement.

Poonacha was made a member of the All-India Congress Committee in 1938 and was elected President of the Coorg District Board in 1941. He was elected to the Coorg Legislative Council in 1945. Poonacha was elected from the Coorg Legislative Council as a representative from Coorg to the Constituent Assembly of India in 1946.

After the merger of Coorg with the erstwhile Mysore State in 1956, Poonacha was the home and industries minister in the S. Nijalingappa ministry.

He was also Chairman, State Trading Corporation of India from 1959 to 1963.

Poonacha was elected to the Rajya Sabha in April 1964. In the 1967 General Election, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Mangalore – (Kodagu) constituency.

Poonacha held the portfolios of Shipping, Railways, Steel and Heavy Engineering in the Union Ministry during 1967 to 1969.

He resigned in 1969 from the Union Ministry following the split in the Congress. Later, he served as the Governor of Orissa and Madhya Pradesh.

Poonacha has two sons and two daughters, including C. P. Belliappa, writer, Col. C. P. Muthanna, President of the Coorg Wildlife Society, Kavery Nambisan, novelist, and Vijaya Muthanna.
